RBA: BLACK-THROATED SPARROW in Abbotsford - May 30th

At 12:15 pm on May 30-2025, Jean Bergen found an adult Black-throated Sparrow in Abbotsford. The bird was on a decommissioned road near the end of North Parallel Rd. The decommissioned road is just a little east and below the dyke. The bird was in and out of blackberry bushes on this road.

The bird was relocated HERE at 6pm by Justin Flint and viewed by several birders until dark.

The bird has not been relocated on May 31st, despite multiple observers looking.

RBA: BROWN THRASHER in Cranbrook - May 29th

At 12:40pm on May 29-2025 Aiva Noringseth found a Brown Thrasher near the viewing platform at the north end of Elizabeth Lake in Cranbrook.

RBA: BLUE GROSBEAK in Peachland - May 25-June 7th

At 6:43 pm on May 25-2025, Markus and Martin Weilmeier found a male Blue Grosbeak perched on shrubs and singing on the south-east side of the road (past the fence) in a weedy field at the north end of Sanderson Ave in Peachland.

Directions: Sanderson Ave becomes a gravel road. Continue along the road to the end of Sanderson, which has tall fences on either side of it. You can see through the fences easily. The bird is on the south-east side of the road, through the fence, in the weedy fields.

The bird was viewed by multiple observers until dark.

The bird continued on June 7th but has not been seen since.

RBA: SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER near Tofino - May 23-24th

At 5:30pm on May 23-2025, Ian Cruickshank identified and relocated a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher on beach logs just west of Box Island on Schooner Cove Beach in Pacific Rim National Park near Tofino. The bird was initially found by Katie Kushneryk, Eleanor Brouard-John and Bob Addley.

The bird continued in the same spot on May 24th and has been viewed by multiple observers.

The bird was not relocated on May 25th or 26th, despite multiple observers looking.

BLACK-THROATED SPARROW in Creston - May 18

At 9 am on May 18-2025, Craig Sandvig and Sachi Snively found a Black-throated Sparrow feeding along Channel Rd at Duck Lake in Creston.

RBA: BLACK PHOEBE in Victoria - March 29th

On March 29-2025, Jeff Gaskin found a Black Phoebe at the north end of the slough at Cuthbert Holmes Park in Victoria.

RBA: WHITE-WINGED DOVE in Vancouver - March 22-April 18th

On March 22-2025, Brian and Anne McSkimming found a White-winged Dove at their feeder at their private home. The bird  and feeders are viewable from the public street.

Please stand on the public sidewalk on N. Skeena St to view the bird. Please do not trespass or enter the yard. Please do not block driveways or point cameras at private homes.

The bird continued at the original feeders on April 18th and was viewed by multiple observers. It has not been seen since.

RBA: TUFTED DUCK in Vancouver and Richmond - March 1-May 3rd

At 10:50 am on March 1-2025, Christina Balkwill found a immature male Tufted Duck at the main pond at Vanier Park. The bird was not present on March 2nd but was relocated on the afternoon of March 3rd and viewed by multiple observers.

The bird continued in the same location, after a seven day absence, on March 10th.

At 1pm on March 16th, Frank Lin relocated the bird at Lost Lagoon at Stanley Park. The bird flew off at 2:45 pm.

On March 24th, the bird continued at Vanier Park pond.

On March 25th and March 30th, the bird continued at Lost Lagoon at Stanley Park

On April 10th Bryan Zandberg refound what appears to be the same bird in the SW inner pond HERE at Iona in Richmond.

The bird continues at the same spot at Iona on April 14th.

On April 17-25th, the bird was seen at Lost Lagoon in Stanley Park in Vancouver.

On April 26th, the bird was relocated at main outer pond at Iona by Mike Toochin.

**On April 27-May 3rd, the Tufted Duck was back at Lost Lagoon at Stanley Park.**

RBA: GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE in Chemainus - March 1st

At 10:30 am on March 1-2025, Jade Blakney found a female Great-tailed Grackle feeding from her hand near the dumpsters by the Chemainus Health Care Auxilliary Thrift Store at 9867 Maple Street in Chemainus. The bird was present all day up until at least 3pm.

At 2:45 pm on January 9-2025, James Linde found a Black Phoebe at the pond with the beaver lodge at Jackman Wetlands in Langley.

RBA: BRAMBLING in Richmond - Jan 3rd-7th

At 10am on January 3rd, 2025 Tak and Mayumi Shibata found a Brambling on the old Ferguson Road. The bird was with a flock of American Robins on the hillside between the YVR Airport fence and the cement plant.

Note there is no authorized parking on the old Ferguson Rd you must park HERE and walk down. Pls follow all parking regulation signs.

The bird continued at the original location on Jan 4th up until 10:30 am, after which it flew NW.

At 3pm the bird was briefly relocated HERE with Purple Finches.

On Jan 5th, the bird continued from 8:30-8:45 am at the original location before flying NW.

It was then relocated HERE on Shannon Rd and viewed by multiple observers after periods of long absences.

On Jan 6-7th, the bird continued HERE along Shannon Rd.

The bird has not been reported since Jan 7th.

RBA: GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE in Victoria - Dec 30/24-May 4/2025

At 1pm on December 30-2024, Tate Wray found and photographed a Green-tailed Towhee in a bare tree off Dallas Rd in Beacon Hill Park in Victoria.

The bird continues in the same location and also has been seen HERE and HERE in the holly shrubs and grass on May 4/25 and has been viewed by multiple observers.

RBA: TUFTED DUCK in Duncan - Dec 18/24-March 8/25

At 11:55 am o  Dec 18-2024 Jean-Pascal Giroux found the returning male Tufted Duck at the Duncan Sewage Lagoons. This is likely the same bird that was first found at the site in 2020.

There is no public access inside the lagoons but birders can view the bird through the fence from the elevated trail off Wharncliffe Rd that gives a good view over most of the sewage lagoon.

RBA: SUMMER TANAGER in Delta - Dec 15/24-Jan 28/25

At 10:35 am on Dec 15-2024, Jon Lambert found a female Summer Tanager in his front yard. The bird has not returned since.

The home is open to the public if it returns. Please view from public sidewalk and do not trespass. Please be respectful of private residences and do not block driveways.

The address is 4595 54 A St in Delta

This is the tenth record for BC.

The bird was not seen on Dec 16 or 17th but was relocated by the homeowners at the same suet feeder on Dec 18th at 10:45 am. 

On Jan 28-2025, the bird was relocated in a private yard in Ladner. The home is not open to the public.

RBA: WHOOPER SWAN in Abbotsford - Dec 6/24-Jan 10/25

At 10 am on December 6-2024, Raymond Ng found a Whooper Swan in a field with over 200 Trumpeter Swans on Campbell Rd, 500m west of Marion Rd in Abbotsford. The bird is unbanded.

On Dec 7th, the bird was relocated HERE on Campbell Rd near to McDermott Rd and has been viewed by multiple observers.

On Dec 8th, the bird was relocated HERE on Wells Line and Bowman Rd and also later seen HERE at Wells Line and Cole Rd.

The bird was not relocated on Dec 9, 10th.

On Dec 11th, the bird was relocated on Lamson Rd just south of Vye Rd in Abbotsford. It was also seen in Sumas in WA State (USA) HERE on Dec 11-20th.

**On Dec 20th Cody Lane relocated it on the Canadian side HERE on Schneider Rd. and after going back to the US it was present again there on December 23rd and 27th and Jan 2-5, 2025 and was viewed by multiple observers.**

**On Jan 10th, the bird continued HERE on Vye Rd near to Cole Rd**

Please be respectful of farm vehicles and pull over completely on the side of the road to view this bird.

This is the third record for BC of a presumed wild vagrant.

RBA: BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER in Squamish - Dec 3-11th

At 2:55pm on December 3-2024, Mike, Barb and Kimberly McGrenere found a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher at the Squamish River Estuary. The bird was in a small flock of Golden-crowned Kinglets on the estuary trail near to 3rd Ave.

At 11 am on Nov 17-2024, Darlene Cancelliere photographed a Painted Bunting in her yard at 407 Edward Street in Revelstoke.

At 3:30pm on November 13-2024, Nancy St. Hilaire found an Ash-throated Flycatcher near the railway tracks off Beachwood Rd in Royston HERE

The bird was relocated at 7:30 am on November 14 nearby on Beachwood Rd HERE and continues there and has been viewed by multiple observers.

On Nov 11 and 12th, the bird continued at Portside Marina/ Ferry Ramp HERE off the end of Marchant Rd.

RBA: WOOD THRUSH in Tatla Lake - Oct 22-31st

At 11:30 am on Oct 22-2024, Jim Sims had a Wood Thrush hit the window of his private home on Jenkins Way near Eagle Lake in the town of Tatla Lake.

The bird flew off after 5 mins and did not return.

On Oct 29th, the bird was refound at a neighbouring home. Visitation can be arranged by contacting the RBA where the homeowner can be contacted for an appt as they do not want their address on the RBA.

The bird continued on Oct 31st at the same location and was viewed by multiple observers.

The bird was not relocated on Nov 1st or 2nd, despite multiple observers looking.

RBA: ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER in Delta - Oct 21-25th

At 12:30pm on Oct 21-2024, Kevin Louth found an Ash-throated Flycatcher near to the 80th St pumphouse at Boundary Bay.

Public parking and access is from the foot of 72nd St.

At 11:30 am on Oct 22nd the bird was refound by Kevin Louth briefly along Churchill St opposite BCFresh in Delta.

At 10am on Oct 25th, Kevin Louth briefly refound the bird 50m west of the 80th St pumphouse. The bird quickly disappeared.

RBA: BLACK PHOEBE in Vancouver - Oct 14/24-Jan 12/25

At 2 pm on Oct 14-2024, Alex Leeder and Destiny Greig found and photographed a Black Phoebe at Hastings Park Sanctuary.

They viewed the bird for 5 mins before it flew off and they couldn’t relocate it.

The bird was seen again on Oct 29th by Doug Cooper in the NW area of the park.

On Nov 5th, Alex and Destiny relocated the bird HERE near the stairs by the box office.

The bird continued at the north end of the pond on Nov 7th and has been viewed by multiple observers.

On Nov 8th it was seen by the WCB Memorial.

On Nov 9th it was seen by the basketball courts HERE

On Nov 10-14 it continued HERE in the fenced off Fright Nights area.

On Nov 18th, the bird continued at the main pond.

On Nov 24th, the bird was seen by the basketball courts.

On Nov 25-26th, it was seen by the WCB Memorial.

On Nov 27-28th, the bird was by the basketball courts.

On Dec 14th, the bird was seen HERE near to the Hastings Racecourse.

On Dec 15th, the bird was seen HERE by Hastings Park.

On Dec 20/24-Jan 12th/2025, the bird was seen HERE by the mini golf area.

RBA: 2 SCARLET TANAGERS in Jordan River - Oct 10 and 11th

At 8:15am on October 10-2024, Joachim Bertrands found a young male Scarlet Tanager in Jordan River.

On October 11-2024, Joachim Bertrands, Liam Singh and Sean McElaney found a female Scarlet Tanager nearby in Jordan River. The male bird appears to have left and could not be relocated.

This is the 6th and 7th confirmed photographed records for BC.

The birds were not relocated on Oct 12th, despite multiple observers looking.

RBA: MASKED BOOBY off Cape Scott - Oct 8th

At 4:19pm on Oct 8-2024, Sebastian Pardo and Kelsey Flynn found an adult Masked Booby 15 km north of Cape Scott, while aboard the CCGS Sir John Franklin research vessel. The bird flew as close to them as 10m and landed on the vessel before taking off in a WSW direction. Sebastian Pardo was able to obtain photos as it flew away.
